چکیده

[1] Knowledge of trace gas fluxes at the land surface is essential for understanding the impact of human activities on the composition and radiative balance of the atmosphere. An ability to derive fluxes at the regional scale (on the order of 10–10 km), at the scale of ecosystems and political borders, is crucial for policy and management responses. Lagrangian (‘‘air mass-following’’) aircraft experiments have potential for providing direct estimates of regional-scale fluxes by measuring concentration changes in air parcels as they travel over the landscape. Successful Lagrangian experiments depend critically on forecasts of air parcel locations, rate of dispersion of air parcels, and proper assessment of forecast errors. We describe an operational tool to forecast air parcel locations and dispersion and to guide planning of flights for air mass-following experiments using aircraft. The tool consists of a particle dispersion model driven by mesoscale model forecasts from operational centers. The particle model simulates time-reversed motions of air parcels from specified locations, predicting the source regions which influence these locations. Forecast errors are incorporated into planning of Lagrangian experiments using statistics of wind errors derived by comparison with radiosonde data, as well as the model-to-model spread in forecast results. We illustrate the tool’s application in a project designed to infer regional CO2 fluxes—the CO2 Budget and Rectification Airborne study, discuss errors in the forecasts, and outline future steps for further improvement of the tool.

Regional inventory of nitric oxide and nitrous oxide emissions for forest soils of southeast Germany using the biogeochemical model PnET-N-DNDC

Though it has been shown recently that forest ecosystems affected by high rates of atmospheric N input are significant sources of N trace gases, reliable regional estimates of the source strength of such forests are missing. In this study, the biogeochemical model Photosynthesis and Evapotranspiration-Nitrification-Denitrification and Decomposition (PnET-N-DNDC), which simulates processes invol...

On using radon-222 and CO2 to calculate regional-scale CO2 fluxes

Because of its ubiquitous release on land and wellcharacterized atmospheric loss, radon-222 has been very useful for deducing fluxes of greenhouse gases such as CO2, CH4, and N2O. It is shown here that the radon-tracer method, used in previous studies to calculate regional-scale greenhouse gas fluxes, returns a weighted-average flux (the flux field F weighted by the sensitivity of the measureme...

Constraining regional greenhouse gas emissions using geostationary concentration measurements: a theoretical study

We investigate the ability of column-integrated trace gas measurements from a geostationary satellite to constrain surface fluxes at regional scale. The proposed GEOCARB instrument measures CO2, CO and CH4 at a maximum resolution of 3 km east–west × 2.7 km north–south. Precisions are 3 ppm for CO2, 10 ppb for CO and 18 ppb for CH4. Sampling frequency is flexible. Here we sample a region at the ...

Automated Near-Continuous Measurement of Carbon Dioxide and Nitrous Oxide Fluxes from Soil

Trace gas fluxes often show temporal variability on the order of hours and accurate quantification may be difficult without continuous or near-continuous measurements. We developed an automated near-continuous trace gas analysis system (NCTGAS) to measure soil-atmosphere gas fluxes on a several-times-per-day basis. In this system, air is circulated in a closed sample loop between fully automate...
